Mainz

Mainz is a German city located at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers. It is the beautiful capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate region and is a city of rich cultural heritage, with roots that date back millennia. The city lies at the heart of the Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, and is the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding river areas.
Mainz is known for its old town, with half-timbered houses and medieval market squares. The real highlight of the old town is the magnificent Mainz Dom, which dominates the skyline. The 1,000-year-old cathedral is an architectural wonder, with Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles all on display.
Also home to the Gutenberg Museum, Mainz honours the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. In it's collection, it boasts two original Gutenberg bibles, the first books printed by Gutenberg which are almost 500 years old.
Along with Cologne and Dusseldorf, Mainz is one of the carnival capitals of Germany.
